What Does “Choice and Control” Mean in the NDIS?

ndis support worker choice and control

One of the most important principles of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the idea of choice and control. But what does this really mean for participants and their families?

Put simply, it’s about ensuring that you are at the centre of your NDIS journey. Rather than being told what services you can access or who you must work with, the NDIS gives you the power to make decisions about your supports, your providers, and the way your funding is used.

Choice: Having the Freedom to Decide

With the NDIS, you have the freedom to choose:

  • Which support providers you want to work with.
  • What types of services and supports best fit your needs and goals.
  • When and how your supports are delivered.

This means you can build a support network that works for you — not the other way around.

Control: Taking Charge of Your Plan

Control means having the ability to manage your plan in a way that suits your lifestyle. You can choose:

  • To self-manage your plan, use a plan manager, or have it managed by the NDIA.
  • How your NDIS funding is allocated toward your goals.
  • To change providers if you’re not happy with the support you’re receiving.

Having control ensures that your NDIS plan stays flexible and responsive to your needs as they change over time.

Why It Matters

Choice and control give participants the confidence and independence to live life on their own terms. It’s about empowerment — making sure people with disability have the same opportunities as anyone else to decide what’s best for them.

At Guardian Support Solutions, we believe that everyone deserves to have their voice heard. We’re here to support NDIS participants to understand their options, explore their goals, and make informed decisions about their future.
